My little ladies will always ask if something is allowed, even though I never taught them that. Small things, never without asking.
Writing assignment #18
Can I…?
From an early age, my little ladies always asked everything. For example, when they were very little they would ask if they could take something from above. Probably to warn me that they were going up the stairs. I never told them to ask anything first. And yet they always did it. Still. The types of questions change every year, but the core remains the same. Sometimes I really think: “Why do you ask that? Of course that’s allowed.” But yes, it is also super cute. Recently the eldest went out with friends and got along for a while. So she dutifully texts before then: Can I stay a little longer? Instead of her just sending a text saying: I’ll stay a little longer, or just staying away completely. So they would never do that. And not because I ask them to, but that comes from themselves. “Can I get a drink?” And my answer is always: “Sure.” And yet, they will always ask. Sometimes they just want to report something and turn it back into a question. Instead of: “We are going to Sara” they say “Can we go to Sara?” They already know it’s allowed. Usually they already know the answer.
Mama Google
They also had a period when she really brought big questions to me, such as “Were there animals on land or on water before?” Then we Googled together what the answer was. They came up with the most special questions. And I usually couldn’t answer those questions. Just as if a mother always knows everything? I hope they will continue to ask me all kinds of questions for many years to come. Then we can have fun together.
