We were inseparable throughout our primary school years. Everything was allowed at my house, but at his house it was a true children’s mecca.
Writing assignment #21
The garden
The garden was truly a children’s mecca with a large playground equipment where we spent hours swinging, climbing and sliding. There was a large chicken coop that we could hide in. Only the cackling chickens betrayed us when we sat down and giggled next to them. There was also a large field for the goat. We even walked her around the neighborhood. People would look at us strangely, but we didn’t care about that. The goat was pregnant at one point. Of course we were there for the birth and that was impressive. The two little bucks loved jumping on our backs. My entire back was often open from the sharp hooves, but I just enjoyed it too much.
The house
The house was great too. Maybe not so much the house itself, but we were allowed to do everything. Even though we were allowed to do everything at my house, there were so many spaces. The barn was the house where my grandfather was born. Downstairs was a kind of workshop with lots of tools and upstairs there was nothing, but we made that our ‘home’. There was also a large garden house, where we often slept and where parties were held. The house itself was actually two houses connected to each other, which allowed us to play a good game of hide and seek, because we could go in any direction. There was also a lot of foreign clothing, so we could dress up for hours.
The environment
The environment was also simply great. It was right next to our school. It was located on a large ditch, so we often went sailing or fishing in the summer and, of course, ice skating in the winter. Being in the center of our little village, everything was just close by. I lived 300 meters away. There was also a cemetery nearby. If there was a sleepover in the garden house, we would all go to the cemetery late in the evening, super exciting of course!
