The first night together with my newborn daughter was terrifying. She was so small that I didn’t even dare to pick her up.
Writing assignment #29
Mini human
Had a wonderfully relaxed birth in the birth hotel. I walked in and wanted to watch the Dutch national team, but that was not allowed because I was already 9 cm dilated. 45 minutes later she was in my arms. So it was a really quick and relaxed birth. She was just really small. Not even in terms of height, because she was just 48 cm. Only she was light, 2600 grams. It just made her look very small. Truly a mini person. And I wasn’t used to a newborn baby anyway. So when she had to be moved from one side of the bed to the other side of the bed during feeding, I would look sweetly at my husband. He had no problem picking her up. He did a nice job of changing the diaper, etc., so I could stay there. Well, I had already done the rest of the hard work. ?
Hotel
And then came the first night together. We were actually allowed to go home, but I didn’t dare to do that at all. And because we stayed in a birth hotel, we got a nice room with a double bed and a nurse came by every now and then. I thought it was a luxury, because I had no idea what to do with such a tiny person, so I could ask questions every now and then. As if I wasn’t fully responsible yet. Because she was so light, she had to supplement with food (for 3 months!), so the night wasn’t very long. But we did get a nice breakfast in bed. That is pure luxury. My sense of responsibility grew every day, and so did she. And now my mini human is a big girl of 13 years old, and very creative!
