Sitting is the new smoking, they say. I exercise a lot, but I still have to learn to live with my painful shoulder.
Writing assignment #33
Because I sit with my mouse in my hand all day, my shoulder is a bit (a lot) overloaded. Actually, that has been the case for years, because I remember going to the sports masseur in 2008 for my painful shoulder. Last year I also went to a masseur for a long time. Of course it’s good for my muscles, but I didn’t really feel like it helped. What really helps is exercise. Since corona I started running, although that doesn’t help at all with a painful shoulder. Far from it, in fact. Sometimes when I go running it actually hurts more. Everything is cramped or something. I also do pilates, but that focuses more on the abdomen and pelvis. Also good for maintenance of course.
The gym
I have been going to the gym since December for strength training. And I go there once or twice a week. Alternate a bit of cardio with strength training. And during strength training I mainly work my shoulders, arms and back. On Wednesdays I am free and I really notice that I have less pain (especially after pilates and the gym). When I sit down at my laptop again and pick up my mouse, I immediately feel it in my shoulder, but also in my neck. I now try to stretch more and more often. It’s really necessary. It has been a problem for years and I don’t think it will ever go away completely, even if I stop working behind the laptop, because I also just enjoy sitting behind the laptop (typing). I just have to learn to live with it and keep moving my shoulder as best I can.
