Enjoying some snorkeling, it became a battle against the current towards the ocean, but luckily I was saved by a sandbank.
Writing assignment #31
Nice snorkeling
In 2004 I was in Australia, in Maroochydore to be precise. I was standing at the Cotton Tree Holiday Park, with the Maroochy River on one side and the Pacific Ocean on the other. The weather was beautiful and I had just bought a bodyboard and a snorkel set in the center. I immediately dove into the water with my snorkel set. Beautiful clear blue clear water, so enjoy. At first I didn’t realize that I was slowly going with the current towards the mouth of the river towards the ocean. At one point I was dragged so hard that I could no longer swim against it. That was a scary moment.
What now?
Because of course I was already starting to get tired. At one point I started swimming a bit with the current, but also towards land. Fortunately, at one point I felt the bottom and was able to catch my breath a bit. Very slowly I was able to hop back to the mainland, hopping a bit. Of course I also had those tricky flippers on, which wasn’t too easy either. But I was just saved by a sandbank!
Those sandbanks are of course difficult for ships and surfers, but I was very happy with this sandbank. I have no idea how else I would have gotten back. I think the current just got harder and of course the ocean is super deep. Well, I don’t really want to think about that. I also think back to Maroochydore with great pleasure, because it was simply a beautiful location. And later I just went snorkeling again, but I paid more attention to the current. Teaching moment.
