At the end of 2019 I dared to take the leap. Almost 40 and still starting a new study, while I had a job and a family to run.
Writing assignment #19
Investment
December 2019, I signed the contract for the training, after much hesitation. I had a family to run, it was a significant investment (€ 6,000) and I also worked five days (half days, on location). So I dutifully started the online training as a developer in January. I was busy in the evenings, which took some getting used to. And then corona arrived and I was allowed to work from home. That turned out great. No travel time and after my 4 hours of work, I could immediately continue with my training. And the kids were also working at home, so they didn’t pick up anything from school. They were already a good age and were very independent. The four of us sat around the dining table all day long. Wonderful time! The training became increasingly difficult and building the projects was not always easy. Had a lot of sleepless nights. But I finally got my diploma. ??
Work
Yes, and then? Then search the job boards, submit resumes, conduct interviews. I have often been told that my previous education was not suitable, very interesting! Fortunately, I was quickly accepted by the company where I still work. What a different world. Everything is of course very technical, only men and I am always the oldest. But what fun it is! I call it advanced crafting because that’s where it is. I still occasionally create a fun little project for myself on GitHub, when I come across a news or something I want to test. It’s just so creative, but in a completely different way.
So I am still very happy that I dared to take the leap. And today next week I will be teaching children programming as a volunteer at CoderDojo. Amazing, right?
