After two job interviews, I came to the conclusion that I like my job more than I thought and therefore no longer want new work.
Applying for a job
In January I was really done with it. I was already not feeling well because of the whole situation surrounding my sick parents. I thought my assessment interview was too ridiculous for words, but it turned out that it wasn’t my fault. The heart of the company is in Brabant, which is simply very far away and requires a travel time of two hours each way. So then I responded to a number of vacancies.
My first job interview was very fun and educational. It struck me that, for the first time in my life, I was not at all nervous about a job interview. In retrospect, they only wanted a lead developer and I’m not ready for that yet, if I ever wanted to do that. I’m not the managerial type, just let me do the work. I really enjoyed asking a lot of questions about their way of working.
My second job interview was also super fun and enjoyable. I was rejected here for the reason that they think I have already come a long way as a web builder and therefore do not fit into an organization that is still experiencing many growing pains. They don’t have a developer yet and are going to start with this, so it is still in its infancy. At first I was a bit annoyed because it is my decision whether it is too easy for me,
but afterwards I understand it because they are of course afraid that I would get bored quickly. And they only work with standard templates, while we make everything custom made, so that would indeed be a step back. Then my girlfriend said:
Describe what your new workplace will be like
I am looking for:
- A boss who gives me freedom.
- Dear colleagues who always want to help.
- Nice creative work.
- Customers who are happy with my help.
- Programs that are easy to record and document everything.
- Working from home in combination with the office.
- Office which can be reached within half an hour.
- Working 24 to 32 hours per week.
- Fun joint activities.
- Where I can develop and grow comfortably.
At the beginning of March I went to the office again for a day. The day was very pleasant and I discussed the travel time with my colleague. We came up with the subject of Australia and I told him that I also had to drive 1 hour or even 1.5 hours there every working day to get to work. Well that was only temporary of course, but still. And when I worked in Amstelveen, I also had a 1.5 hour one-way journey by public transport. And then I went there every day. Then I always did a course while I was traveling.
Since the travel time is the only pain point on the list above, I just come to the conclusion that I don’t want to leave at all. I just like my colleagues, I like my work, the activities together are fun, just a bit too far away. So this time I had a podcast on and that made my travel time productive too.
