What’s the tastiest thing you’ve ever eaten?
One evening we ended up in a restaurant in Lucca with a menu in Italian. We had no idea what we ordered.
In 2008, the two of us were on a tour of Italy. The first two stops were Lake Como and Lake Garda, before heading to Monza for Formula 1. After five days of partying we left for Tuscany.
We had visited Lucca, a beautiful fortified town. In the evening we looked for a restaurant just outside the city walls, but we couldn’t really find anything. In the end we were so hungry that we just went inside somewhere. It looked really small from the outside. There weren’t too many tables inside, but there was a balustrade with a very large wine cellar below. Everything was covered in dark red velvet and it just looked very expensive. When the waitress came with the menu, it turned out to be entirely in Italian. They did not have an English menu. There were also no prices listed. But hey, we were hungry.
We just pointed at something on the menu, hoping that there would be something tasty. We got a starter, which we didn’t ask for, but it was very tasty. And the main course was so delicious. We really had no idea what it was. We had never seen anything like it. Later I tried to look it up and it was very similar. But what the rest of it was, I have no idea. Of course, it doesn’t matter to the rest, because it was very tasty and we enjoyed it very much.
And then we had to ask for the bill. We held our breath, but it was really ridiculously cheap. That could never have been right. If it had cost a lot of money, it would have been worth it. And now it didn’t cost anything. Bizarre. I also have no idea what this restaurant in Lucca was called, and that doesn’t matter at all. Beautiful experience.
